Another way you can enter detached head state is if you're in the middle of an interactive rebase, and you want to edit one of the commits. When Git drops you at the commit to edit, you'll be in a detached head state until you finish the rebase. I learned from somewhere a detached screen can be killed by screen -X -S [session # you want to kill] kill where [session # you want to kill] can be gotten from screen -ls But this doesn't work. But I just pushed to the remote repository, and what's there is different-- a couple of the commits I'd killed in the rebase got pushed, and the new ones committed locally aren't there. I think "master/origin" is detached from HEAD, but I'm not 100% clear on what that means, how to visualize it with the command line tools, and how to fix it.
